14A American Pepper Sauce Bottle

American Pepper Sauce Bottle H: 8 inches Mid to late 19th Century

Remarks: This beautiful bottle contained a condiment that was a spicy hot sauce made from Tabasco peppers, vinegar, and salt. Pepper Sauce was used to season tainted meat that was slightly spoiled due to the lack of refrigeration. Small cylindrical shaped bottles were carried by Civil War soldiers. One of the first pepper sauces to be made commercially was by Edmund McIlhenny (1815-1890), a New Orleans banker.  later this became the Tabasco Sauce band. Ref: CF. Ketchum 1975 p. 141

Its 150th Anniversary of the Tabasco Sauce band. The company Mc Ilhenny Co. is  celebrating (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/23/dining/tabasco-mcilhenny-diamond-reserve.html) with a Special Tabasco in a new bottle.

Below see a picture of that special bottle and their standard bottle
