** TEN ROMAN BOWLS

As one of the most versatile of all vessel shapes the bowl was probably the first to have been made by our earliest ancestors.  A bowl is common open-top container used in many cultures to serve food, drinks and for storing other items.  Although other materials such as stone, metal or wood were used to make bowls before and during the Roman period, once glass became popular around the 1st century glass bowls were manufactured in great abundance. The following examples from the Allaire Collection illustrate the many variations in the sizes and shapes of glass bowls created during the Roman period
